Mikel Arteta discusses team spirit at Arsenal after Liverpool draw

This week has been highlighted in the Arsenal fan newspapers for some time as a huge one for the club.

The Gunners have three key games to negotiate, with two legs of the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool sandwiching a North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

After surviving the first part of this triumvirate well with a 0-0 draw against the Reds at Anfield – despite the best efforts of red-carded Granit Xhaka – thoughts had begun to turn to the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, there are now significant doubts as to whether this match will take place or not.

Here are your last Arsenal titles ahead of a potentially huge weekend for the team.

Arsenal ask for Tottenham’s postponement

Arsenal have asked the Premier League to rearrange the clash with Tottenham on Sunday.

After Thursday’s encounter against Liverpool, manager Mikel Arteta has a number of new injury concerns to deal with. Moreover, Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey are absent from the Africa Cup of Nations, while Xhaka is suspended.

A decision needs to be made on whether the game can take place on Saturday.

“The Premier League have received a request for a postponement from Arsenal FC in relation to their away game against Tottenham Hotspur, which is due to be played at 4.30pm on Sunday 16 January,” a Premier League statement read.

“The Premier League board will meet tomorrow to consider the bid and advise both clubs and their fans of its decision.”

Carragher encourages Arsenal to sell Xhaka

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has encouraged Arsenal to switch to Xhaka.

The Swiss midfielder was sent off early in the clash at Anfield, making it five red cards since joining the club.

While Xhaka has put in occasional good performances over the years, he has often let the team down with rash decisions.

“The thing with Xhaka is we said before the game that every manager chooses him, he’s a good character, a good coach, a good boy, he’s a good player, we saw him under a Swiss shirt and both in an Arsenal shirt,” said Carragher.

“But he’s a liability in terms of tonight.”

Saka’s last injury

Arteta said he was unsure if Bukayo Saka would be available for the Spurs clash, should it happen.

The England international limped out of the game as Liverpool implemented a stellar defensive change for the team.

Saka has had a great campaign and as an Arsenal academy graduate he will be desperate to make an impression in the team’s biggest game of the season.

“He felt something in the last few minutes, he was really tired,” Arteta said after the game against Liverpool.

“I don’t know. He’s a young lad and recovering very quickly. But he’s been playing a lot of minutes in the last few months, so let’s see who’s available.”
